The HAUS SEEFAHRT Foundation has been supported by its members for over 475 years. To carry this tradition into the future, we need new voices, fresh perspectives, and committed individuals from today’s maritime world.

Whether you are retired or just starting your nautical career, as a maritime member you will become part of a unique community based on mutual support, respect, and responsibility. It is not only experience that counts here, but also the willingness to carry on the tradition. In addition, the Foundation is administered by committees drawn from nautical and commercial members, elected in accordance with traditional statutes. This is another avenue to serve the community.

Membership in HAUS SEEFAHRT not only offers insights into a strong network, but also opens up concrete support opportunities for your later professional life or retirement – for example, through discounted housing or social support. And you can contribute your ideas, commitment, and vision for the future of seafaring today.

After all, for a foundation to remain alive, it needs people who shape the present and help carry the future.

How do I become a seafaring member?

Come aboard – as part of a strong community

Whether you are just starting your career or already have a wealth of experience, as a seafaring member of HAUS SEEFAHRT you will become part of a foundation steeped in tradition that champions people in the maritime industry – both now and in the past.

This is not about prestige, but about solidarity. As a member, you will be part of a network of captains who take responsibility, support each other, and help shape the connection between their profession and society. For younger captains and nautical officers in particular, membership is an opportunity to network with Bremen’s maritime community at an early stage – and to play an active role in shaping it.

Becoming a seafaring member is straightforward – especially if you have a maritime background and genuine interest. The main requirement is a valid, unrestricted captain’s license and at least two years of active sea service. Most of our members come from the Weser region, but that’s by no means a must. Students of nautical science can join as associate members and become full members once they’ve earned their captain’s license. Most new members are introduced by existing ones – or they simply reach out to me directly. What matters most: we’re always happy to welcome new faces, especially younger captains. After all, the foundation thrives on the involvement of each new generation. And once you’re part of it, you’ll quickly realize: HAUS SEEFAHRT is more than just a historic institution – it’s a piece of home, firmly anchored on land.

How do I become a commercial member?

Committed individuals from business and society

Commercial members of HAUS SEEFAHRT are individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Bremen’s economy and the common good. Membership is considered an honor and a sign of special recognition – it is not the result of an application, but of being elected by existing members.

It is not possible to apply for membership yourself. Instead, you must be nominated by a current member and accepted through a formal election process.
